The activities of the department cover the processes of receiving deposit copies and acquiring new literature, registration, processing and cataloguing of library documents.

The library collection is replenished through deposit, purchase, donation, book exchange and subscription.

The collection grows by over 7000 volumes of books, non-books and periodicals annually.

By virtue of the Compulsory Deposit Act (promulgated in SG 108 of 29.12.2000) and its Regulations (promulgated in SG 26 of 12.03.2002), the library has the status of the third national repository of periodicals. Of the books, we receive those with a print run of more than 300 and which have been deposited for distribution at the NBKM.

Here the lists are being prepared for application to the programme for the renewal of library collections of the Ministry of Culture "Bulgarian libraries - modern centres for reading and information".

An important part of the formation of the collection is carried out thanks to donations from readers, publishers and various organizations. The Library follows its own Donation Acceptance Policy and for each donation gesture, the donor receives a Donation Certificate.

The processing of new literature includes bibliographic description, classification and identification of the documents and preparation for their reflection in the traditional catalogues that the department maintains - alphabetical service of books - in Cyrillic and Latin and alphabetical catalogues of the branch units.

The department also makes deductions in accordance with the procedure laid down in the regulations for the purpose of cleaning and updating the collection.

Automation of library processes began in 1994.

This was the beginning of the library's electronic catalogue accessible not only on the local network but also via the Internet.

The retrospective entry of books prior to that year continues.

Periodicals and single issues are fully represented in the electronic catalog.

Subscriptions (see Rodina Library - Stara Zagora) are made annually for periodicals in Bulgarian and foreign languages. Databases of current periodicals by subscription are maintained daily in the reading rooms of the library.

How was society structured during the Second Bulgarian Kingdom? Was there a feudalism similar to the Western European one and what was the hierarchy in the Bulgarian aristocracy? Did our boyars have their own heraldry and their own feudal castles? How did they dress? What were their rights, duties, rituals?

In “The Aristocracy of the Second Bulgarian Kingdom” prof. Nikolai Ovcharov sheds light on these important for our history, but poorly studied questions. His extensive and thorough research is presented in a language accessible to a wide audience and is the result of many years of work and research - both on archaeological sites and written sources - Bulgarian, Byzantine, Serbian, Vlach, Moldavian, Western European.

From the vast amount of information he researched, prof. Ovcharov comes to a definite conclusion:

The aristocracy of the Second Bulgarian Kingdom was no less glamorous and proud than the magnificent nobles - dukes, cities and barons of France, England and the Holy Roman Empire of the Germanic people.
