Veliko Tarnovo

The Summer Campaign "Come to the Library" is an initiative, conceptually designed to provoke the students from I to XII grade from Veliko Tarnovo, who are readers of RL "Petko R. Slaveykov" to read more and more books during the summer holidays.

The first edition of the event took place in the summer of 2017 and was realized under the idea and patronage of Ventsislav Spirdonov - Chairman of Veliko Tarnovo Municipal Council. Over the years, it has been variously called "Fun Summer at the Library" in 2017, "Come to the Library with Friends" in 2019, 2020, and 2023. However, "Come to the Library" has always been the main motto. Mr Spirdonov's desire, since the campaign's inception and first broadcast, has been to work together to help promote interest in books, reading and increase literacy among the young. The campaign has become a sustainable initiative, whereby the library contributes to the effort to provoke adolescents to read more and more fiction and popular science literature, thus enriching their general culture. The campaign period is from 1 June to 15 September, after which an analysis of the results is carried out. The students with the highest number of books borrowed are the big winners. For the reporting period, students in three age categories (7 to 10 years /I to IV/, 11 to 14 years /V to VII/, 15 to 18 years /VIII to XII/), based on books borrowed, have the chance to win three big material prizes: a laptop, a tablet and a reader.

According to different years, between 2000 and 3500 students from the city and the district participate in the competition, aiming to be among the big winners between 1 June and 15 September. After the end of the reporting period and the analysis of the results, an event is organised at which the names of all the winners are announced. Many additional awards are also given out at the celebration; the Sustained Reader Award, the Library Ambassador Award, and the Partnership Award are some of the special awards the library gives out. Preschoolers are also active patrons of our children's departments, so they are often among the honorees. Prizes for reading families are also provided. They are themed "My Reading Family" and are for the most active children and their parents, also library patrons, who educate their offspring in the love of books and reading. "With Library Friends" is another themed award that is broadcast, and it is intended for readers from friendship circles who visit the library together. The organisers present certificates and books to all the winners of the summer campaign. The prizes are provided by the institution and with the help of sponsors. After the end of the reporting period, an award ceremony is prepared, which is traditionally held in October in the foyer of RL "Petko R. Slaveykov In the presence of officials and guests. It is in turn accompanied by a rich musical programme.

How was society structured during the Second Bulgarian Kingdom? Was there a feudalism similar to the Western European one and what was the hierarchy in the Bulgarian aristocracy? Did our boyars have their own heraldry and their own feudal castles? How did they dress? What were their rights, duties, rituals?

In “The Aristocracy of the Second Bulgarian Kingdom” prof. Nikolai Ovcharov sheds light on these important for our history, but poorly studied questions. His extensive and thorough research is presented in a language accessible to a wide audience and is the result of many years of work and research - both on archaeological sites and written sources - Bulgarian, Byzantine, Serbian, Vlach, Moldavian, Western European.

From the vast amount of information he researched, prof. Ovcharov comes to a definite conclusion:

The aristocracy of the Second Bulgarian Kingdom was no less glamorous and proud than the magnificent nobles - dukes, cities and barons of France, England and the Holy Roman Empire of the Germanic people.
