The meetings with authors, part of the BOOK FOYER WITH AUTOGRAPH 2024, continue with prof. Plamen Doynov and the presentation of his new book "Beside Terror. Modelling the New Writer of the People's Republic of Bulgaria (1944-1956)".
The author was presented in particular depth by prof. Ivan Stankov in the reading room of R.L P. R. Slaveykov" on 18 April. Guests of the event were lecturers at the University of Veliko Tarnovo "St. St. Cyril and Methodius, students, literary critics and others. The book "Beside Terror. Modeling the New Writer of the People's Republic of Bulgaria (1944-1956)" traces events and processes, analyzes models and mechanisms through which the social image of the new writer in the People's Republic of Bulgaria between 1944 and 1956 emerged, was created and further shaped. Accounts of the purge in society and in the Writers' Union in the months after the Ninth, the arrests and trials of the People's Court against people of speech, the whole system of repression are built upon by descriptions and analyses of the phases of inclusion, (re)education and transformation in which the image of the state writer - an employee of the totalitarian republic - crystallized. A book about the multifaceted presence of terror in Bulgarian literature, but also about the figures, shadows, words and actions that measure behind its bloody veil in an amalgam of repression, fears, privileges, Marxist-Leninist enlightenment, writing on party-state orders, planned state publishing, censorship bans and permissions, official honours, etc. Thus the new writer of the People's Republic of Bulgaria stands out as an exemplary instrument for the literary production of socialist realism. An existence in creative unfreedom, in fear, labour and joy. Apart from the terror.
