For another year in 2025, the Regional Library won a project under the Ministry of Culture's "Bulgarian Libraries - Modern Centers for Reading and Information" program. The goal is for public libraries in Bulgaria to receive targeted funding to renew their collections.
Thanks to the project, new books worth just over €5,100 were purchased in January from a pre-approved list that complies with the program's rules. The recapitulation shows that 429 titles selected from 30 Bulgarian publishers had to be purchased, 33% of which are by Bulgarian authors. The selection of books was based on the cultural and educational needs of the citizens served by the Regional Library through its structural units.
Scientific literature, monographs, and teaching aids were purchased from St. Kliment Ohridski University and St. St. Cyril and Methodius University. From Ciela Publishing House, legal and historical literature, as well as literature in the field of literary studies and psychology. Iztok-Zapad Publishing House is represented by numerous bestsellers—I will mention one of them—Carol Quigley's Tragedy and Hope: A History of the World in Our Time. Next are books on social psychology, pedagogy, management, and biographies of famous people from various fields that have been popular in recent years—from politics to sports to cinema. In this case, we have included those about Novak Djokovic, Al Pacino, Catherine Deneuve, Judi Dench, Celine Dion, Taylor Swift, and others.
The largest percentage of titles covered is, understandably, fiction and children's fiction and popular science literature. This is because this category is in the highest demand, and it is necessary to have sufficient copies to meet reader demand.
All our service units will have new books from the "Rebels" and "Crime" series, Scandinavian literature from Emas Publishing House, romantic and crime novels, also from the "Travel and Entertainment" series by Era Publishing House, novels from Labirint Publishing House, which publishes Narine Abgaryan, Abdulrazak Gurnah, winner of the 2021 Nobel Prize in Literature, and Irish writer John Boyne. From Kolibri Publishing House, we have purchased books by Salman Rushdie, Paul Auster, Ian McEwan, Irvin D. Yalom, Laurent Gounelle, and others.
Contemporary Bulgarian literature is represented by authors from Janet-45 Publishing House, including Antonia Apostolova with Pain Comes Later, Nikolay Terziyski with Rodinia, Violeta Radkova with And Our Bed Is Greenery, Dimitar Kenarov's "The Bulgarian Trace," and others, Kostadina Kostova's "Trifena" – SoftPress, Krasimir Dimovski's "They Wander in Their Labyrinths," Kostadin Kostadinov's "The Last Soldier Emperor," novels with the Hermes Publishing House logo, and others.
