How was society structured during the Second Bulgarian Kingdom? Was there a feudalism similar to the Western European one and what was the hierarchy in the Bulgarian aristocracy? Did our boyars have their own heraldry and their own feudal castles? How did they dress? What were their rights, duties, rituals?
In “The Aristocracy of the Second Bulgarian Kingdom” prof. Nikolai Ovcharov sheds light on these important for our history, but poorly studied questions. His extensive and thorough research is presented in a language accessible to a wide audience and is the result of many years of work and research - both on archaeological sites and written sources - Bulgarian, Byzantine, Serbian, Vlach, Moldavian, Western European.
From the vast amount of information he researched, prof. Ovcharov comes to a definite conclusion:
The aristocracy of the Second Bulgarian Kingdom was no less glamorous and proud than the magnificent nobles - dukes, cities and barons of France, England and the Holy Roman Empire of the Germanic people.
